You've got a great collection that you want to put on display in your home, you have spare space on your bookshelves, now what? 1. Replace the moveable shelves with glass ones.

If your bookshelf has adjustable shelves that rest on pins, simply get the measurements of the shelves and go to a glazier. They can cut glass to the same dimensions and you can put in light, clear glass shelves which will completely change the "feel" of the shelving unit. The main thing you have to be aware of though is getting glass designed to withstand the stress. Explain to the glazier what you want to do, and ask to get shelf brackets that fit into the holes of the vertical supports of the bookshelf instead of the pins that are there now.

2. Install lighting underneath each shelf.

You can get inexpensive fluorescent lights from most hardware stores. Buy small, flat units and wire them together so that they are controlled from one switch. Drill small holes in the back of the bookshelf for the wires, and mount the lights on the underside of each shelf. This way, with the flick of a switch you can light up the darker parts of the shelves, and make your whole collection more visible.

3. Install mirror backing.

Measure the back, vertical part of the shelf, and then buy mirror and glue it to the back. This will reflect the back of your collection, and make the whole shelf feel much deeper, while it also will highlight all of the items on the shelf.

4. Paint the shelves a different color.

If you want to draw attention to your collection on display, consider painting the shelves a different color. If the whole unit is a wood texture, think about painting the display shelves white. This will offset them from the rest of the unit and highlight the collection on them. The color of the shelf depends very much on what type of collection you're displaying. Bright and shiny objects (quartz rock, glass figurines, etc.) might go better on a darker background, while model cars would look better on a lighter background. Think about it!

5. Wood lettering and other decorations.

A great way to spruce up your shelves is to add lettering around the frame to personalize it. Here's an example. You can purchase simple wood or plastic letter in many colors, and glue them onto the frame. So above a collection of golf balls you can put up "FORE!" or something to that effect. This will serve to draw everyone's eye to the shelves, and to your precious collection.

Interior Decorating - 5 Tips For Designing Small Spaces

If you've ever lived in one, you know that small spaces come equipped with their own special regimen of challenges, and it's up to you to come up with crafty solutions. Because of the creative Rubik's Cube they represent, and the amazing makeovers that often result, these have long been some of my favorite spaces to design. Below, I've provided you with 5 essential guidelines to help you clear the decks, so your style will shine!

1. Pare down on the number of furnishings, not necessarily the size. People generally think that because they have a small space, they need to purchase small furniture. This is not exactly correct, and frequently leads to what I refer to as "dollhouse syndrome." When you walk into a small space filled with small pieces, your brain says, "Huh, look at all these little things in this cramped little space." When you walk into a small space with a couple of larger pieces, something interesting happens. Now your brain says, "Well! Look at these large pieces on which I can spread out! I must be in a large space!"

Of course, you can't be ridiculous about this. If you live in a studio apartment, a pit sectional with reclining ends is not the answer... sorry. DO make sure that there is plenty of breathing room between the pieces, and that traffic can move easily through the entire space. For most people, a regular sofa and one or two small club chairs will provide ample seating, and you only need enough tables to support your lighting, and be within easy reach to set things down.

2. Light colors vs dark colors: Would-be decorators love to talk about how dark colors make a room look small. *long suffering sigh* Rather than step up on my soapbox, I will simply say that this, too, is not exactly correct. For the sake of this article, I shall simply compare the two options:

Light colors do a wonderful job of reflecting the light, and they move easily from space to space. One way to make a small home feel larger is to paint all the connected areas the same color. This makes it feel like one room flows seamlessly into the next, creating the illusion of more space. Light colors are wonderful in rooms with plenty of natural light. They generally make a room feel cool, airy, and open. Dark colors, on the other hand, make a space feel rich, cozy and intimate. Consider this: if your room is the size of a shoe box, with little to no light, it doesn't matter WHAT color you paint the walls. No one is going to walk in there and say, "Wow! This room feels huge! It must be because you painted it white!" Not gonna happen. So why not embrace a small space for what it is, and make the most of it? Your results will be dramatic.

3. Storage: A place for everything, and everything in its place. If it doesn't have a place, get rid of it. Can't get rid of it? Get rid of something else. Nothing, I repeat: nothing makes a space feel smaller than clutter. If something isn't important enough to you for it to have a proper home, it's not important enough to keep. It's that simple.

To that end, get creative with storage opportunities! Closets aren't the only answer, but we'll start there. If your closet has a shelf on the top and one or two hanging bars, you are living in a different era. Get yourself a closet organizer, and you will, at a minimum, triple your closet's capacity. How about under the bed? How about adding bookcases with attractive baskets? A coffee table or ottoman with great storage? A nightstand with drawers? A shelf that runs around the top 12" of the room for decorative boxes or display? A chest in the entry instead of a table? You get the idea.

4. Lighting: Poor lighting makes a room feel like it's closing in. Everything is dim and shady. Fabrics and colors look dingy. Sounds great, right? Make sure your room has at least three light sources, which is what we call "triangulating." This generally ensures that all objects (and people) are receiving some degree of light from every side, which, unlike the scenario above, makes a space feel warm and inviting. FYI, overhead lighting alone is not generally sufficient, and causes a great deal of eye strain when reading or watching TV.

5. Accessories: Less is more. Please don't cover every table and shelf surface with little this's and that's. No matter how precious they may be, it looks like junk. Choose 1 or 2 large pieces, rather than a larger number of smaller ones. A great vase makes a much more attractive style statement than twelve 4x6 photos in mismatched frames. Further, when accessories are properly displayed, they can be much more appreciated by both you and your guests. If you have many things you love, feel free to rotate them in and out. Every time you bring them back into the room, they'll feel new and exciting!

The extra support you get from a specifically designed bikini top will lead to a better fit.

Colour is really useful to take into account when choosing swimwear and you can use it to your advantage when buying mix and match bikini tops and bottoms. For example, if you go for a darker top than bottom, the difference in colour will give the illusion that your bust is slightly smaller than it actually is, which will lead to you looking more evenly proportioned on the beach.

Small Bust

The most flattering swimwear for the woman with smaller breasts is the halter neck and traditional triangle shape bikini tops. Adjustable straps on your bikini top will help to ensure that it fits properly and always make sure you get the correct cup size so that you can get the most lift that a small bust needs. You may also want to consider looking for a push up or padded bikini top to further enhance the size and shape of your breasts. As with the bigger busted styles, colour is also really important. For example, smaller breasted women should consider wearing bold bright colours on top and darker ones on bottom, as this gives the illusion that your top is bigger than your bottom and draws the eye up away from the bottom area. Also, consider patterns such as polka dots and horizontal stripes as this makes the bust look fuller.

Hour Glass

If you are lucky enough to have a small waist with hips and bust sizes that are equal but larger than your waist then you are said to have an hourglass figure. If this is you, then consider yourself lucky because you will find that almost all swimwear and beachwear styles will fit you nicely and will look great too. What you need to do is simple, show off what you've got. Don't cover things up with a tankini, go get yourself a nice new sexy bikini that accentuates your waistline and your bust. You already have hips and bust that are equal in size so don't spoil this by messing with different colours, always go for a matching bikini. If you are slim then you can accentuate your fantastic body shape even more by going for a tie side bikini.

Long Torso

One of the things you might struggle with if you have a long torso is finding a one piece swimsuit that fits properly. Consequently, it's usually best to go for a bikini or tankini so that you can ensure a nice fit. If you want to try and minimise the length of your torso, then look for bikini bottoms with a high cut as this will make your legs appear longer, bringing your torso into proportion. It therefore also makes sense that you should avoid boyleg bottoms as this will make your legs look even shorter and so make you look more out of proportion.

Pear Shape

Women that are said to have a pear shaped body, simply have hips that are wider than their bust and shoulders. As with all the other body shapes, we are striving to create the effect that your body is all in proportion and choosing wisely in the swimwear department will help you do this. So, go for high cut bikini bottoms as this will create the effect of longer legs. Also, make use of mix and match bikinis and go for a brighter coloured top and darker coloured bottom. As with the small breast category, this draws the eye up to the breast area and gives the illusion that your top is bigger than it is and your bottom is smaller than it is. All of these things come together to give the overall impression that your body is in perfect proportion. To help you could also consider using a padded bikini top and avoid wearing larger pants or boy shorts as this simply gives the game away as the more material in play means there is more flesh to cover up.

Apple Shape

Women who are apple shaped have slimmer arms and legs and have larger waistlines. Panic not though, as it is quite a simple task to find swimwear that flatters. It's all about showing off your best bits, namely your legs. So, show them off to their fullest potential by going for high cut or tie side bikinis which will make your legs appear even longer. Tankinis were sent from Heaven for apple shaped women as they cover the tummy area perfectly. Make sure it fits properly though. It should be long enough to actually meet the top of the pant because if you leave a gap, then guess where the eye will be drawn. What tankinis do so well though is to cover the tummy area while still allowing you to mix and match, so go for a patterned top to break up any lines. This will give the illusion of a smooth tummy. You could also consider going for a sculpted swimsuit which will squeeze you in just the right places for a fantastic look.
