Cleaning Decorative Items

Cleaning an office may involve more than emptying the trash, sweeping the floor and vacuuming the carpet. Some offices may have areas covered with "trinkets" such as photos, plaques, sculptures and all kinds of knickknacks. There is no end to the list of items that people may have on their desk or throughout their office.

Decorative Shelf Supports

The following ten tips are guidelines of how to handle cleaning these special personal or business treasures.

Decorative Shelf Supports

1. Ask your customer if they want you to clean any photos, plaques, sculptures, etc. that are on desks, shelves, tabletops or in display areas. These items may be personal treasures the owner may prefer to clean.

2. If customers want you to clean these items make sure your employees know how to clean them properly. Ask the owner or a supervisor what the recommended cleaning procedure is for that particular piece. Taking the time to know how to clean something properly can save headaches later.

3. Take the time to assess how old, delicate, precious or heavy an item is before cleaning it. If the item is moved will it fall apart? Or if you have to move a heavy item, such as a sculpture, can it be put back safely?

4. Examine items carefully to see if they can be cleaned safely. Test the cleaner you will be using with a white cloth or a Q-tip in an inconspicuous spot before cleaning the entire item.

5. You do not have to clean items in place. It may be easier to move the item and then clean it. When you do have to move something, place a cloth or towel under the object to cushion it.

6. No matter what decorative item you are working on, clean it slowly and carefully.

7. Clean these special items using dry methods if possible. A microfiber works well on many of these surfaces. If you must use a cleaning solution, apply as little solution as possible and remove it by blotting the solution. Ultrasonic cleaning may also be used on some items.

8. Be careful not to leave cleaning residue on the item. Leaving residue may leave a sticky surface on the item allowing it to collect dirt faster.

9. Replace any items that you moved for cleaning back to the same place you took it from.

10. If any damage or breakage occurs report it immediately. Never put a damaged item back in such a way as to hide what was broken. You have to be able to handle items to clean them and occasionally things may be broken or damaged.

It may not be a part of your cleaning proposal to clean decorative and unusual items in an office. But if it is, make sure you follow the proper protocol and treat your clients' treasures as you would treat your own.

Decorate Your Child's Room with Military Camo Bedding

With all that's been going on in the world, people are more aware than ever about how vital the military is and how important their sacrifices are for protecting our country. One example of this appreciation is the rising popularity of military camo bedroom decorations. Many young boys have looked up to G.I. Joe and his compatriots, but now even girls are getting into the camo theme.

Decorative Shelf Supports

If your children asked to decorate their bedroom with a military camo theme, here are a few ideas for how you can help them turn it into a military retreat.

Decorative Shelf Supports

Starting with: the bed

The bed is the biggest piece of furniture in the bedroom, so whatever theme you're going for should start here. Fortunately, there are a number of different kinds of military camo bedding in different colors, so whether you're decorating for a boy or a girl, you'll be able to find a color they like.

Are they a fan of the classic olive drab? Then you can get the military camo bedding in olive. Would they rather have blue? That's also available. Do you have a little girl who would like camo, but just can't get enough of pink? Then pink camo would be a good option. There are even heart-shaped pink camo pillows to decorate your little girl's bed.

Windows and walls

The bed isn't the only place to make your theme shine true. There are also a number of creative touches for the windows and the walls to set off your military camo bedding.

If you're looking for window treatments, you could go with mosquito netting or canvas curtains, or you could find camo curtains and valances. Another idea is to combine the two, perhaps with a camo valance and then canvas for the curtains.

Creams, tans, and whites would be good paint for the walls. Those colors are not only military-influenced, but they're easy to match, especially if you're going with pink or blue camo as opposed to classic green. If you are doing classic green, you can also look to other military uniforms for paint inspiration.

If you're feeling really artistic, consider painting a military mural on one wall. You could have Army tanks or Jeeps rumbling across the wall, or maybe the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima. The potential here is endless.

For wall decorations, consider making a shadow box for your child, especially if you have had friends and family members in the military. A shadow box could include the American flag, G.I. Joe action figures, postcards and pictures from friends and family members in the military, medals or fatigues from older family members, etc. Not only is it a cool decoration, but it can also preserve the memories of your loved ones who have served our country.

Decorating a child's bedroom in military camouflage is a great way to show support for our military. It's especially good if you have family members serving, and that way your kids can be reminded of their loved ones even when they're overseas. If bedroom decorating is in your future, take a look at a camo theme.

Unique Choices For Your Bathroom Remodel

Boring is out. It is time to liven up the look of your home and you need to start with the bathroom. The bathroom is an important place so it is important to make sure it looks great. Therefore, you should put serious work into its remodel. However, it you make a choice that is not quite right, it is not the end of your interior design career. You can learn from your mistake so that you can avoid it in the other rooms such as your living room and bedroom. Therefore, do not be afraid to go the creative route. It might turn out so well that it will be featured in the next home improvement magazine! Here are some possible design choices you might like to incorporate into your home!

Decorative Shelf Supports

1) Footed bath tubs. If you want a unique and sophisticated design element, then this type of tub is a fantastic choice. The standard in bathrooms today is the alcove or drop-in tub and shower combination. While this set-up is popular because of its economical use of space and relatively cheap price, it is not attractive at all. The bathtubs used in these types of combinations are not the most luxurious bathing apparatuses. It is much better to have a tub that looks good and is useful. A freestanding bathtub sitting on chrome clawfeet will not only look chic, it will feel luxurious whenever you step into it for a warm bubble bath.

Decorative Shelf Supports

2) Accessory closets. Forget those cheap looking medicine cabinets that fit over the sink or on an open wall. They look terrible and, if you have guests, they will inevitably open them up in order to discover all your medical problems. Try to invest in quality accessory, or jewelry, cabinets instead. These elegant items can match your bathroom vanity and hide all those medications as well as be a great place to store your nice jewelry.

3) An open shelving unit for towels and washcloths. Everyone has a linen cabinet. Do something different! The glass shelves are strong enough to support towels and decorative accessories, such as candles, but the open, clear appearance does not weigh down the room. It looks beautiful and elegant and it makes those towels much easier to grab.

A sophisticated and unique bathroom is not difficult to create. Footed or clawfoot tubs, accessory closets, and open shelving units are just three of many ideas you should consider when you are redecorating your bathroom. Good luck getting your room in the next magazine feature!

Guide in Using Japanese Room Divider

It is often debated among historians that the use of room dividers originated in Japan. This is a logical hypothesis. Given the fact that ancient Japanese homes frequently house large families and retainers, Japanese room partitioning made it easy to divide large rooms into smaller spaces to accommodate everyone and to give them privacy. Some of them have even been used as backdrops for traditional Noh and Kabuki plays, dances and religious ceremonies.

Decorative Shelf Supports

Among the many arts and traditions that the Western Civilization has adopted from Japan, the use of the Japanese room divider is considered one of the most popular. For westerners who look for practicality and convenience, these room partitioning are indeed a perfect solution to their space problems.

Decorative Shelf Supports

Japanese room dividers can be permanent, semi-permanent or temporary. Permanent Japanese room partitioning resemble walls, and can support lights, electrical wiring, and even small shelves. In semi-permanent Japanese room partitioning, the edge of one panel is usually attached to the ceiling and floor, and the divider itself is folded open to create two spaces from one large room. To remove the divider, you just simply it loose from its attachments. Temporary Japanese room dividers are made of paper or similar materials and are intended for short term use. These three types of room partitioning come in a wide range of colors and designs, as well as sizes and folds to meet your room requirements.

Like ancient Japanese households, you can use these partitioning if you want some privacy. As mentioned earlier, they are both easy to install and to remove. This is especially convenient for children who have outgrown the stage of room sharing, and desire to have a room of their own. In these economically difficult times, adding a new room or putting up a wall will prove to be a very expensive endeavor. Rather than construct a wall, a permanent Japanese room divider is the perfect solution to divide a room into two smaller spaces. In the same way, a temporary divider can divide a large guestroom if you have more than one visitor to your home.

Some individuals use Japanese room partitioning for decorative purposes. They make for elegant backdrops for sitting or dining rooms. Semi-transparent Japanese room partitioning can be breathtaking especially when it catches the natural light that pours inside the room.

As you now know, there is a reason why the room partitioning are believed to have been originated in Japan.

Woodworking Tips: 6 Basic Wood Joints

Almost any woodworking project will require some type of wood joint. From building beds to bookcases and just about everything in between, you will find that wood joints will be necessary. While there are many styles and even variations of each style, there are 6 basic wood joints that can be used for all your building needs.

Decorative Shelf Supports

The Butt Joint

Decorative Shelf Supports

This is the simplest of all wood joints and is used more heavily in construction projects as opposed to furniture woodworking. A butt joint uses nails or screws to butt two pieces of wood together. To create this joint, no cutting or routing is required to interlock the pieces of wood. First you should use a carpenter's square to be sure that the two pieces of wood are level and perpendicular to each other. It is always best to use a small amount of adhesive along with the nails or screws. If you need additional strength, use corner brackets of angle irons if they will be hidden from view.

Miter Joint

If you want to hide the ends of the pieces of wood, a miter joint is the way to go. This is a weaker joint and is normally used for decorative pieces such as molding, trim or frames. If you are working on a joint that requires support, stay away from this wood joint. The most common use of the miter joint is to attach two pieces of wood at a 90 degree angle. For the best results, use a circular saw and set the angle to 45 degrees. After your pieces are cut, add some adhesive and nail the pieces together. Be care to position the nail so that it does not come too close to the edge of either piece and split the wood.

Lap Joints

If you need a strong wood joint, but the pieces of wood you are joining are different thicknesses, the lap joint is the answer. Quite simply, a lap joint requires notching of both boards. There are several types of lap joints that can be used depending on the location of the joint. If you are joining the ends of two pieces of wood, use an end lap. This requires that you saw out the end of each piece of wood the width of the adjoining board and one half the thickness of the board. When placed together you will have a strong, 90 degree joint. If you want to join the end of one board to a center section of another board, you can choose from a cross lap, middle lap or dovetail lap joint.

Rabbet Joints

This joint combines the butt joint and the lap joint and is used if your woodworking project involves cabinet, bookcases or draws. This joint is used to join the ends of two pieces of wood. To create this type of joint, cut or route a recess in one piece of wood that is the thickness of the adjoining piece and half the thickness of the board. After creating the recess, the second piece of wood will form a butt joint into the recess.

Dado Joint

The dado joint is similar to the rabbet joint, but it is used to join the end of one piece of wood to a middle section of another. This joint is heavily used to interlock the ends of shelves to the side pieces when you are building bookcases or cabinets. For this joint you do not need to cut or route the shelves. At the desired location, cut or route a recess in the side board that is the thickness of the shelf, half way through the side board. This is a strong joint and will give full support to the shelves.

Dowel Joints

This type of joint is basically a butt joint that is reinforced by interlocking wood dowels between the boards. In order to achieve a square and level joint, it is crucial that the dowels from the first board are properly aligned with the second board. It is highly recommended that a doweling jig be used. Drill the holes in each piece of wood slightly deeper than one half of the length of the dowel. This will insure that the two pieces will fit flush and the dowel will be completely hidden.

How to Make a Corner Bookshelf For Your Study

Making a corner bookshelf for your study can be a simple one level shelf or a set of shelves with an enclosure. Your first items to do are to pick the material you wish to use for the shelves, select the finishes you will apply and the location where you want the shelves. There are just tons of pre-made shelving kits available today. Corners, straight, pre-edged, scroll work bracket supports and so on. If you choose to do your own here are some helpful hints. Pine wood is the easiest to work with as it is a soft wood.and cuts, drills and sands quite easily. Oak is a hardwood that requires some more special techniques. Both make fine shelves but the final finish you can achieve may determine what species of wood you choose. Once you determine the location of your new shelf you need to locate the center lines of the wall studs. A stud finder tool can make quick work of finding the studs. Gentle tapping on the wall with hammer can sometimes be useful but is not really accurate. Mark the stud centers for nailing purposes later on. A corner shelf is one the easiest shelves to mount as by it's very nature, it has supports on two adjoining walls. Using a carpenters level mark on the wall two lines at the height you want the finished shelf.

Decorative Shelf Supports

Do not measure up from the floor. If the floor is not perfectly level, your shelf will not be either. Make one mark at the desired height and then using the level, transfer it to the other wall. A corner shelf support can be as simple as a piece of one inch by two inch material. If the shelf is two feet wide on each wall you will need to install one twenty-four inch piece and one twenty-three inch piece (nominal) on the walls. You can router the edges with a fancy design or just round them over as you choose. Once the support pieces are in place (ledgers) you can construct the shelf itself. An inexpensive shelf can be cut from plywood with a nice front curved edge. By using a piece of three quarter inch wide or larger edge trim to finish off the cut edge, you can paint this shelf and have a great unit. If you wish to stain the shelf you will need to either edge glue and build up a wide board or obtain a twenty-four inch wide board from a saw mill.

Decorative Shelf Supports

Lumber yards generally only carry boards up to twelve inches wide. By pre-drilling all the holes and countersinking them for screws, the fasteners will become invisible when filled with wood putty and painted or stained. You can install multiple shelves this way and the entire shelving will appear to float in the corner. If you have the more complex wood working tools, you can install some sides very easily using what is called a "kerf" cutting method to place small vertical slice cuts on the inside face of the boards and gently bend them around the curve of the shelf. Making a curved door is beyond many homeowners abilities or tools but by carefully kerfing the back of the boards to be used for the door, gently bending them to shape around the curve and clamping them in place, it can be done. The boards will quickly assume the desired shape. After the initial shaping, applying a thin coat of good carpenters wood glue and a couple of stiffeners you will have a great curved wood door. Install some decorative hinges and a lock and you have wonderful corner shelf unit in your study for your treasures.
