1. Radial beams. Many bar and kitchen type areas are built with radial drops, which can conform to the contours of a bar or countertop and give a separated appearance to a particular living space. With radial drops, it can often be very attractive to extend wood beams forward to the next linear drop, almost a web effect. With more rustic areas, such as Tuscan stone backsplashes or antique wood flooring, reclaimed wood beams are the ideal match for the ceiling. Hand hewn real wood box beams will give an identical look, are a much greener product, will last longer, and require far less engineering than a conventional solid beam.
2. Decorative Wood Trusses. Exposed trusses have a striking appearance, beautiful and powerful looking. Unfortunately, they often weigh a ton, and are extremely difficult to make from reclaimed wood. Often the deco truss made from reclaimed cannot be considered weight bearing, as the wood is not an engineered product with standard load calculations. As such, they must be accounted for in the engineering of the ceiling not as supports but as loads themselves, which increases the amount of weight bearing truss which is actually needed significantly. There is also the problem of spans, as these trusses cannot bridge a very large gap, which is where they would look best. Hand Hewn wood box beams, done by professionals, can be the best way to get the exact look of the deco truss without the inherent liabilities of 2 ton chunks of wood running across your ceiling. Add some vintage metal hardware and you will have a 100% authentic looking exposed wood box beam truss.

3. Fireplace Mantles. Fireplaces use huge chunks of wood to create mantles. Often the dimensions can be hard to find with real reclaimed, and putting conventional in would not look right, the wood would twist or crack, etc... the best solution is to use a reclaimed style wood box beam to wrap the offending timber, giving it a new old appearance, if you understand the paradox there. This is a very popular option employed by quality remodeling outfits.
