The buzz right now is to buy "Made in America!" The DIY homeowner is encouraged to look for and buy US-made products for home improvement projects. Let's keep this buzz buzzing for awhile. It is worth it for all of us.
If more stores will carry and more customers will buy products made in the US, everyone in the US will win.
Decorative Shelf Supports
As a small business owner, I can say that my co-owners and I care about the quality of our products, and we stand behind them. We are accessible by phone and e-mail, and we resolve the occasional problem that arises. How much do you enjoy resolving a problem with a person overseas who does not speak English as a first language? This has got to stop! It is up to each of us to stop it!
My biggest problem as a small business owner, whose two small companies manufacture decorative products for home, dorm, and office, is to convince retailers to carry our products. Our biggest problem is with the biggest retailers--the Big Boxes. The Big Box stores are not nimble. They are not responsive to customer or supplier opinions and suggestions.
Since they forgot to ask us, let's help them out. Let's tell our local stores that are part of the Big Box conglomerates that we want to buy US-made products. Let's tell them to identify what percentage of the products on their shelves is made in the US. And then let's challenge them to double that in one year and double it again in the second year. Then, when they are used to doubling, let's make them double the number again in the third year. Let's not stop until our US stores carry 80% US-made products.
Our Big Box stores have leaders who work in a vacuum. When is the last time you were asked as a customer of your local home improvement store for your opinion about product selection, quality, or country of origin. Since these companies don't ask, we each have to tell! Should we just tell the clerk at the front desk? No! What good will that do? Ask to speak to the store manager. Get bold. Once the manager hears from 100 customers, might he start to care? I chose to say "he" because, unfortunately, most store managers are male. That's a subject for another article.
Women, and men, let's show the stores who is boss. Let's tell the store managers that we are not going to return to shop in stores that carry such low percentages of US-made goods. Let's tell store managers to tell their corporate offices that it matters to each of us and all of us that US companies get the opportunity to sell their products in these stores. Tell the managers that we care about supporting small US businesses. We want variety and quality.
The final convincing comment to a manager may be to say that you will make your home improvement purchases online and stop shopping in their store. Unless you need paint or really heavy building materials, consider looking for the products you need online. Of course, if the tide turns, and local stores carry US-made products, then let's go back to those stores in droves.
We must fix our homes, and we must fix our US economy. Let's work together to do both at the same time!
